What does
Häagen-Dazs mean?
Remember this very European-ish sounding ice cream brand? Well, for starters, it's not. It was started by a Reuben and Rose Mattus in the Bronx in 1959.
Although Mattus Reuben set his eyes on the premium ice cream segment, business began suffering due to stiff competition. He took on an audacious experiment: he wanted to create a new category and knew branding was critical. The marketing genius knew that "if you're the same like everybody else, you're lost", prompting him to think of a name that sounded foreign, strange and European.
Enter, Häagen-Dazs, which doesn't mean anything. It's just a strung along conglomeration of random syllables in Danish which sounds super fancy & authentic.
Secret to naming a brand?
Gibberish sounding, double-a and an umlaut.
huh?

Does the dog die?
I was watching Ricky Gervais' Armageddon and yes, before you ask, yes it's edgy, offensive and charged: racially & politically as he talks about the end of the world.
He talks about an interesting website: Does the dog die which initially started with a specific goal: PSA for dog lovers who want to avoid the usual emotional and manipulative dog-death tropes found in shows and movies.
The website has evolved into crowdsourced trigger warning platform for movies, tv, books and more. In fact, the site now sports more than 80 user-suggested “triggers” ranging from bisexual cheating to audio gore to shaky cam used to ending is sad.
It's become internet's guide to watching without getting offended.
(and to answer the question, yes, it does in John Wick)

The bike that gets
worshipped in India.
Meet Om Banna from Rajasthan, a proud owner of a 350cc Royal Enfield was struck with tragedy as he rammed his bullet into a tree and his ill fated bike careened into a nearby ditch. As usual, the police arrived and bike was pulled into the station for investigation.
Here's where things become interesting: the bike went missing from the station and was spotted near the ditch. The cops brought it back and this time they emptied the fuel tank, locked & chained it. Guess what? The bike was back in the ditch. Resilient as ever.
The locals believed that the bike was blessed by Om Banna's spirit and provided respite to distressed travellers. News spread and a shrine was built (obviously) by enclosing the bike in a glass box. It was christened Bullet Baba. Even today, people offer bottles of alcohol, apply tilak and sing folk songs in his honor.
Man probably got drunk and lost control but hey, that's India.

Interesting news you might've missed.
On January 1, 2024, Mickey Mouse entered the public space, meaning all its IP become available for creators and man, people are super fast — there's already a horror based comedy and game already in the works. RIP childhood.
A 13-year-old boy became the first human to beat the Tetris game by triggering the game's "kill screen" after a marathon 1511 lines.
Tom Scott, one of my favourite Youtubers of our generation has hung is boots after consistently putting out content every week (Monday, 4PM) for exactly 10 fuckin years! Watch

What happens when you microwave Grapes?
I was flabbergasted when I learnt about this peculiar scientific experiment in the kitchen. Curiosity got the better of me, I ordered grapes, kept them insanely close to each other and turned on the microwave.
Tense seconds passed. The skeptic in me believed it would burst as common sense would dictate. My eyes were transfixed at the point of where both the grapes were almost in contact and boom! A spark. A plasma.
I would like to explain but I'd rather let scientists do reasoning.

WTF is Ladakh’s Pregnancy Tourism!
This is one of the rare occurrences where a reel has taught me something interesting.
Legend has it that after the invasion of India by Alexander the Great in the seventh century. Many of Alexander’s men remained in the Indus Valley after he left. The Brokpas, who identify as members of Alexander’s lost army, are believed to be the last pure-blood Aryans. And it’s said that a few European women travelled here looking for Brokpa guys to take home the “pure seed.”
And apparently, the Brokpas, are noticeably taller than average for Tibetans and have fair skin, long hair, high cheekbones, and light eyes.
Seems like a good product-market fit.

X-Ray Music Records
This is one of the coolest facts I've ever come across!
It's a story about how love for music transcends boundaries and bones.
During the cold war era, Stalin welded an iron hand and all things culture was subject to censorship: literature, drama, graphic design, painting, poetry, or music.
People learnt that music could be etched on photographic films, especially X-ray films which were abundantly available. These 'bone music' began developing into an underground movement that helped give people at least a little sense of identity back. So cool!

📌 Khmer Kitchen, JP Nagar
Finally gave into all the hype and visited this house turned into an aesthetic Cambodian bar and restaurant in the south of Bengaluru.
As I was going up the stairs, I was greeted by a library and a book on Girish Karnad, the famous Kannada playwright, actor and theatre person caught my eye. This seemed a bit odd and misplaced. But soon learnt that Khmer Kitchen was formerly his writing studio.
The whole vibe now looks like a scene from the Legends of the Hidden Temple: Sculptures, motifs, waterfalls — all of them instantly transporting you to Cambodia.
And and, if you were to have the last meal of your life, end it with their Fish Amok — an aromatic curry made with fish, coconut milk and heaps of spices.
11/10 would recommend.
